Monmouth County, New Jersey is a happening place. It also has a rich history of cultural tradition and that includes rock ‘n’ roll, blues and other kinds of American music. Take a trip to a place that people are proud to say they’re from! Get a first-hand view of a place that was so integral to the era of rock and roll, and still relevant in the music world today.
The “Boss” and Bon Jovi
Perhaps the first person that comes to mind in the New Jersey music scene is Bruce Springsteen – a rocker who gained fame and notoriety over a number of decades to become one of the top musical names of all time. Borrowing style from Bob Dylan and other influences, Springsteen and the E Street Band frequented Asbury Park as well as Long Branch, Freehold, Monmouth Beach and other areas around Monmouth County. Various Monmouth County locations are frequently mentioned in Springsteen’s story of coming up in the music business, and he never forgot his roots no matter where he traveled.
Another big musical name known to haunt Monmouth County locations is Bon Jovi. Born in Perth Amboy and raised in Sayreville, Jon Bon Jovi played the Monmouth area in Atlantic City Expressway and later touring with Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, another big name, before vaulting to fame in the band “Bon Jovi” and then later pursuing a solo career.
Other Big-Name Musicians
Some of the biggest names in Asbury Park are individuals who later joined Springsteen’s E Street Band, including Steven Van Zandt, Danny Federici and Clarence Clemons on the saxophone.
Groups like Patty Smith, the Ramones and The Clash also played Asbury Park often as they became more famous.
Monmouth County resident Debbie Harry of “Blondie” fame also recorded music in the Asbury Park area. Debbie Harry still performs in the area and “Blondie” has just recently performed to sold out crowds at Red Bank’s Count Basie Center For The Arts. All of these acts contributed to a groundswell of local music that caught on and maintained itself over the years, where the Stone Pony and other venues stand as a testament to music in Monmouth.
Modern Monmouth County Music
Decades later, Asbury Park is still a musical center. You’ll see some big name musical acts coming to local venues, as well as programs like Songwriters by the Sea that celebrate the local history of music appreciation.
